Blepharoplasty- About the procedure

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids. Surgery can be performed on the upper lids, lower lids or both. During this type of plastic surgery, a doctor removes skin, muscle, and sometimes fat that may be causing the area around your eyes to sag.

Whether you want to improve your appearance or are experiencing functional problems with your eyelids, eyelid surgery can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

The Surgery

Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis meaning that you can go home shortly after the procedure.

Your surgeon will start by injecting a numbing agent into your eyelids.

The upper eyelids are addressed first. Here, your surgeon will make a small cut and remove excess skin, as well as muscle and sometimes fat. Some of these tissues might be moved to other areas surrounding the eye before your surgeon closes the incision.

The lower lid blepharoplasty usually involves removal of fat, which contributes to the under-eye bags, as well as sometimes removing a small amount of skin. The incision may either be on the inside of the eyelid or on the outside underneath the lower eyelashes.

Preparing for the surgery

Prior to the day of the procedure, you may be asked to take steps such as these:

  • Stop taking any medication that can thin your blood and prevent it from clotting normally. You'll need to stop these medications one to two weeks beforehand, to reduce the possibility of excess bleeding during the procedure.

  • Eat only a light meal such as soup the evening before your surgery.

  • Do not wear makeup of any kind on the day of surgery.

  • Make sure someone is available to transport you home and watch after you during the first several hours after you are released following surgery.

The results of eyelid surgery is long-lasting. While there usually is little pain involved in this surgery, there can be swelling or bruising. Most patients are presentable to the public in 10-14 days. However, it may take a few months before final healing is completed.

Most people who undergo eyelid surgery report satisfaction and improved self image. Those whose vision was hampered by excess folds of skin often have improvements in the visual field they are able to see.
